(Installment One)
Bouckville Car Show:
day for a car show. Ton of
people and the lot was full of
antique cars. We had a display
for the Mid-State Antique
Stock Car club with a couple of
cars and our traveling
museum. Got to chat with a
few od racers and had a nice
visit with Former Mid-State
Late-model driver Ed Rothwell
about his days in the WESCAR
#1. I know it is hard for the
club to pull double duty as
some of them were at Five Mile
point and put on a vintage
race for the Heath Memorial.

Heath Memorial Five Mile
All things considered,
we had a very good turnout of
cars for the Heath Memorial.
(11) cars in the pits and at
least one more (maybe 2)
behind the grandstand. The
best turnout of cars the club
has had all year (to date). It
was a hot, muggy day and the
weather took a toll on cars and
drivers alike. I'm watching the
guys around in our pit area,
and we're all pretty much
dragging our arses in the sun.
Me included. The club
membership has gotten older,
but at least we still think
young.. Much credit must go
to Jim Hilimire for getting cars
out to this race, he worked at
it, calling and e-mailing
members and then handled
the chores in the pits as well.
We had a good field of (for the
most part) old cars, which was
the point of the Sportsman
Class. New cars on hand
included Dale Pitchers' #98
and Norm Wintons' #32.
Cars started breaking
early...Tex Gorden had trouble
starting and then stying
running. Dale's car suffered
the 1st time out bugs with
power steering belt problems.
Jim Mitchell's car was running
hot, as was Norm Winton's. My
night came to an end early as
well. Warmups were fun and
the track was nice, smooth
and fast. We take the checkers
and into one my engine quits,
'tink tink tink' no oil pressure.
Damn. Well, it owed me
nothing, $600 outlay and that
was over 10 years ago now.
Onto the trailer she's done,
just like the ignition cut right
out - which it did as I found
out later. I've only lost two
flatheads through the years,
and both were rods letting
loose. This time it was the
crankshaft, and just the snout
at that.. so at least the block,
cam, rods, pistons, etc. can
likely be salvaged. Just have to
dig out a crank that'll fit. OK -
onto the 43A which isn't up to
snuff tonight.. We adjust on
the barrel valve and high
speed valve but we haven't
found the sweet spot yet. The
heat went off without a hitch
and the cars looked great.
Very competitive for the most
part but Dad still wasn't up to
speed. Leo Kusezlo won the
heat over Mike Cole, Howdie
Witter and Jim Hilimire. For
the feature we've adjusted fuel
flow again and Dad wants me
to try it. Dale Pitcher is first off
the track with more steering
woes, I have no doubt that
Dale will get it corrected and
be back with a competitive car.
Brian Moore is also
competitive but running hot,
as is Kavin Winton in the 32,
they're both off. The 43a is still
not right, it's hitting on 6 and
oiling - time for some rings. Up
front Howdie, Jim, Leo, Mike
and Rich Taggert are putting
on a show. You could throw a
blanket over them. Mike gets
into Leon in turn one sending
him around for the only yellow
setting up a close finish where
Leon gets back by 'em all for
the win. Great race from where
I'm sitting, just wish I could've
gotten up there to be part of it.

Oh well, we're all on the trailer
in one piece. A little
wrenching needs to take place
before the next race, and
that's normal. Hate to say good
bye to the Red Shredder, we'll
see once the pan is off. Dad
already has rings and bearings
on the way so he plans on
being back. And I hope the
rest of the guys make it back
as well.

Memorial night, we appreciate

Brookfield Re-Union 2014.
Last week a bunch of guys
together again at the Madison
County Fairgrounds at the
behest of Jon Button to re-live
the thrill of Brookfield
Speedway. And believe me it's
always a thrill at a race track
when you can't see where
you're going.... Mother Nature
provided lighting on this warm
afternoon however so vision
was at a maximum.
Participants included Jon
Button, Carl Camenga, Dick
Schoonover, Richard
Ackerman, John Mason, The
Parry's, Utica-Rome Speedway
including Barb Clark and
Gene Cole amongst others.
The guys had some pretty
good track time with Schoonie
taking out the S33 for a
workout. My father related
everyone had a good time and
that the highlight of the day
was watching John Mason
"Thin' himself into Jon
Button's Hillegas.... He made

(Installment Two)
Fonda 7/19/2014
Night of Stars and what a
time it was. There were 41
former Late-Model driver that
ran Fonda Speedway 1963,
!978-84 reunited once again
to share the spot light. There
was a meet and greet
1:00-4:00 for the fans and 15
restored race cars on hand.
The light lite of the day was
the Mike Budka, Dave Hunt
#64 Camaro that sat for 34
yrs until this event and to
work they went putting it
back together and it is show
quality. Names like Jenson,
Carlone, Bleser, Cottrell,
Lagrange, Pettit, Fleres,
Macjka, Lighthall, Brundage,
Duell, Tesiero, Kupiac just to
name a few were on hand to
share their story's about the
years gone by and yes their
were hand shake's and a
couple of tears as most of
them haven't seen each other
in over 30 years. The Bleser
64 and Mewhorter 23 paced
the Pro-Stock feature the the
green flag and then had their
group photo taken on the
checker board with the
winner. There was a 8 lap
Vintage race held and the
winner was Frunk
Blunckhard with the Lazzaro
#4 congrats Frunk. It was a
blast and a time many won't
forget for a long time. To the
management of the Fonda
Speedway and their crew we
owe a hearty THANK YOU.

Legends of Penn Can
(6) race cars and (2) show
cars showed up for the
Legends of Penn Can this
past Friday night. Mike Cole
won the heat and Kavin
Winton won the feature as
Rob Casti played nice...
Other's on hand were Dale
Pitcher, Brian Moore, G.
Wood, Mike Newell and John
Mason. From all accounts it
was a good show and fun

Installment 3
Otsego County Fair
July 29 - Aug 3
Every year John Mason and
Mike Newell put together a
nice display at the Otsego
County Fairgrounds - home
of Midstate Speedway and
many a fond racing memory.
This year was no different
and the cars were once again
reviewed by an enthusiastic
crowd. Many thanks to all
who brought a car out and to
Sharon Parry for the photo's.

Installment 4
Utica-Rome Speedway
August 20
Watching the weather all
week, we knew there was a
very good possibility we'd be
traveling to a rain-out on
this particular Wednesday
night. However, the upside
was that we'd get to spend
some time together as father
and son, and also see some
friends - and with luck, some
good racing, so we didn't
hesitate. The trip to Vernon
was, for the most part,
uneventful - is it just me or
are people just a little less
courteous on the road these
days, yes, I have been
working on my Politically
Correct training... We got set
up and had just enough
time to shoot the breeze with
John Mason and Gene Cole,
and then it rained - hard.
The decision to postpone was
an easy one. Barb Clark
couldn't apologize enough -
wasn't her fault and we
thank U/R and all it's staff
for once again being so
gracious. Make-Up Date is
set for Sept. 1st. Maybe see
you then.
Summer 2104
Installment 5
Thunder Mountain
August 30
This was the race I was aiming
for. With my best engine
broken, I decided to put the
car back to just where it was
when I first got it out. Red
Shredder came out but I don't
think it's hurt that bad, the
engine turned easily so I
think it's 'just' the crank
that's broken, and only in the
first main at that. That poor
flathead turned a lot of laps
around 5 Mile Point with Hal
Karchar in the late 50's and
early 60's, I guess it's  only
fitting that it broke there. So,
what to do? Old Faithful is
pretty worn out, but the 'Little
Snotter' is sitting there, and
has been for about 10 years
now... It only had 6 races on it
when I took it out, and it won
1/2 of them. Things have
changed a lot in the club
since then though, 248 cubes
of Flathead Ford, no matter
how good the engine is, is
akin to taking a pop gun to
the OK Corral. Most fellows
have small block Chevy's in
now, of various sizes... In it
goes. I went through the car
over a few weeks, everything
apart, straightened the front
end, grease bearings - really
the first time in a long time
everything got attention. It
was good therapy working in
the shop, I need to do more of
Dad has been working on his
car as well, the engine has
been out and he's replaced
rings and lapped valves. The
problem lately has really been
the injectors though - when
they're right the car jumps
but when they're not it's
pretty frustrating. Dad shows
up in the morning, we get
some chores done and load
up. I decide to take him up to
Thunder Mountain on Route
26 in order to roll through
Glen Aubrey, scene of many a
good race..
It's a nice cool night, and the
pits are full of sprint cars. The
parking lots are full also, this
is how I remember Thunder
Mountain - Packed House. We
have a decent showing as
well, 11 cars which is possibly
the 2nd largest field the club
has had this season. Bill
Marsh is here, he just turned
88 and this marks his 66th
season at the track. He and
Bill Kisselstein have been
working on the 37 and it
looks good. With the Witter 4
on hand we have 4 of the old
50's class cars here. Almost
all the cars are production
framed, old school stock cars -
Dale Pitcher has his car
working better, Norm
Richardson is on hand, Brent
Cobb is in good spirits, Brian
Moore, the Coles, Rich
Appleby and Jim Hilimire are
all on hand - this is going to
be good night.
Warmups go well, I haven't
run the car other than to set
timing but it doesn't miss a
beat, and handles great too.
Dad's car is off though se we
try the barrel valve and high
speed valve adjustments, it's
too rich...
OK - let's relax, go watch
some races. I'm pleased to see
Byron Worthing win the held
over feature - his first win
ever. His dad Doug is a great
guy, and they're low buck so
it's nice to see a local win. The
CSRA & ESS Sprint groups
have their stuff together and
run off quickly. ON the other
hand... we're walking back
towards our cars, thinking
we've got all kinds of time...
Jim Hilimire says "Ha, look at
Norm, he's already in the
car.." Well, he knew more
than us as we hear over the
loudspeakers "Vintage cars to
the line.." Crap! Better move...
It used to be easier getting in
these cars. .. naturally, I drop
my goggles after I adjust my
straps, (I'm out of practice).
Luckily John Mason finds
them for me and I'm pulling
them on as I hit the track.
Starting in the back, I'm going
to feel this thing out a bit -
the green drops and the
adrenaline rushes,
easy...easy.. up front I watch
as brilliantly painted coupes
and coaches dance, they're
really dancing, swapping
lanes looking for a advantage.
I try it low, then high, I get a
little too high in 3 and 4 and
loose ground but make it up
in a lap. The car is fast
enough, the gear is right, it
handles good, save it for the
feature. Brent Cobb wins the
Dad's car still isn't right, runs
up to 4k then dies, but the
pipes are looking good so
we're closer, adjust the barrel
valve a little more, it's not
leaning out. Throw some fuel
in and mount up, we're first
Lining up third, I pull up
alongside Mike Cole, into turn
three and there's the green.
Howdy Witter jumps to the
lead, Mike and I make it
around the 98 of Cody
Pitcher. Down the backstretch
and into three I'm still beside
Mike as we chase Howdy,
Mike chops down and I'm
there, brace for it and we
scuff. I never lift. Whenever
I've been in that situation, I
hold my line and square up, if
I leave my line I might run
over a guy coming up my
inside, and If I lift I get
smacked in the rear, so I held
my line. Around 4 and there's
a caution. Mike went around,
his right rear is flat. I can't
figure what happened, we
didn't hit that hard, it didn't
even bobble my car.
Restart outside Howdy and
that little 248 gets going, it's
getting better as the night
goes on. I get to turn one first
and never hear another
engine. Concentrate. All that
goes through your mind is
'don't screw up, hit your
marks, don't overdrive it.' And
I did. Lap 8 and there's a
caution, cars are stacked up
to the pits off of 4. Restart and
I hit my groove again, the
checkered flies too soon, I was
having fun. Howdy is second,
Dad third and Cody 4th.
Everyone else was off by the
Afterward, most people were
congratulatory in the pits. I
see Brent's car is banged up,
'What happened?' 'Aw, I
thought I saw a hole but by
the time I got there it was
closed.' OK. I hear Mike got
up in the air, and the Coles
are upset. You could cover the
scuff on my crash guard with
one small brush stroke...
Jim Hilimire did a great job
running the show, and Carl
Spoonhower prepped a great
track, it was smooth and
tacky. As I said in victory lane,
I run tires that are 10 years
old, or older and I had no
problem with traction. Many
thanks to Carl, Brett Deyo
and all the track staff for
having us, we had a great
It was particularly nice to
receive the several
congratulatory phone calls
then next day. Facebook was
interesting too... I guess in
this day and age with the
social media, you haven't
really 'made it' until you've
been called a SOB on
Facebook... Ha! In the old
days you just took care of that
stuff in the pits. Now your
wife is the tuff guy behind the
keyboard. Ben Stephens said
it best, "Didn't you know
you're supposed to get out of
the way?" Really? "No, I'm just
kidding.." That was funny. At
least they took the post off
Facebook, but I did see it.

Shotsy ad Ben for the calls, it
was nice to get one, first in 4
I had been thinking that after
this race I would retire the
B29. Especially if I did well.
It's in good shape and can go
out a winner. The club has
changed so much since I
brought it out in '98, the
rules changes have essentially
rendered it uncompetitive on
most nights. I don't want to
put an overhead V8 in it, it's a
flathead car. And there
should always room for a car
like that in a club like this.
But, that's another article I'll
write soon... On this night the
stars aligned and I had
enough luck to win one. So if
I decide to retire it, it goes out
the right way. And if we
decide to race again, we'll
double our horsepower...

Installment 6
Spencer, NY
September 14
This past Sunday I joined
Benny Stephens in attending
a presentation of Shangri-La
Speedway by DR. Gary George
at  the Spencer Historical
Society Museum in Spencer,
NY. Dr. George, along with
Gary Gitchell and Ron Hills,
has been doing research on
the original Shangri-La
Speedway in preparation for
their upcoming book on the
subject. It was very enjoyable,
and I learned alot - for
instance, upon the debut in
1946 there were 18,000
attendees!!! Remarkable. Dr.
George, with assistance from
Mike Monnat, unearthed some
color film of the first year as
well, when the track was
essentially oiled dirt. Fantastic
footage, man those guys were
real thrill seekers. It's no
wonder Ernest Hemingway
said 'There are only three
sports: bullfighting, motor
racing, and mountaineering;
all the rest are merely games.'
Those guys took their lives in
their hands every time they
climbed in the cockpit.
Gary went through the early
years, including the big cars,
midgets, then conversion to
the stock cars - which in the
1950's included combinations
of locals, NASCAR and Finger
Lakes cars - there were
distinct differences. He also
went into the decline of the
track, it's closing and
subsequent re-opening in
1962, the glory of the '60's
and 70's stock cars, supers,
and various other classes. The
competitors at the track
included (by my count)  - (4)
Indianapolis 500 winners, (1)
Daytona 500 winner, (1)
Southern 500 Winner and (1)
World Champion - the track
certainly had a rich history. I
look forward to the book
release and had a great time at
the presentation.

CNYHOF at Midstate
