'THE MOUSEVILLE MONSTER' #43
Richard Ackerman
THIS 1933 FORD FIVE WINDOW COUPE WAS MODIFIED FOR RACING AT
WILLIAM WUST'S EDMESTON, NY GARAGE IN 1959. ORIGINALLY
PREPARED FOR COMPETITION AT THE MIDSTATE (MORRIS) AND
BROOKFIELD, NY SPEEDWAYS, IT ALSO LOGGED TIME AT MAPLE
GROVE (WATERLOO), FIVE MILE POINT, LEBANON VALLEY AND NEW
YORK STATE FAIR SPEEDWAYS FROM 1959 TO 1965. OWNED BY
WILLIAM WUST OF EDMESTON NY, THE CAR WAS DRIVEN BY KURZON
'MOOSE' CARY OF COOPERSTOWN, NY. THE 'MOUSEVILLE MONSTER'
NICKNAME WAS ADAPTED IN HONOR OF CARY'S DRIVING STYLE WHICH
INCLUDED AN AFFINITY FOR BENDING FRONTENDS WHILE RIDING
ROUGHSHOD OVER OPPONENTS EN ROUTE TO SEVERAL TRACK
CHAMPIONSHIPS AND MIDSTATE AND BROOKFIELD. CARY VISITED THE
WINNERS CIRCLE SO MANY TIMES THAT THE MANAGEMENT AS
MIDSTATE PLACED A BOUNTY OUT FOR THE UNHEARD OF AMOUNT OF
$25 FOR ANYONE WHO COULD BEAT HIM. EQUIPPED WITH A 'FULL
HOUSE' RACING FLATHEAD MERCURY, THREE STROMBERG
CARBURETORS, A HARMON-COLLINS IGNITION, AND A 'MICKEY MOUSE'
HALIBRAND QUICKCHANGE REAREND, THE CAR WAS VERY
COMPETITIVE WHEREVER THE TEAM TRAVELED. THE ORIGINAL
CREW CONSISTED OF WILLIE WUST, MOOSE CARY, MARK ENMAN, AND
RICHARD ACKERMAN.
IN 1984, THE MIDSTATE ANTIQUE STOCK CAR CLUB WAS FORMED.
HAVING TAKEN A NINETEEN YEAR BREAK FROM THE RACING SCENE,
RICHARD ACKERMAN DECIDED HE NEEDED A TOY. PURCHASED FOR
$35, THIS CAR WAS THEN RESTORED TO THE ORIGINAL
SPECIFICATIONS BY RICHARD HOWARD, JEFF WIGGINS, RICHARD,
THOMAS AND JEFF ACKERMAN FOR COMPETITION WITH THE
MIDSTATE CLUB. SINCE RESTORATION, IT HAS GONE THROUGH A FEW
CHANGES (IN REFERENCE TO FRONTENDS), GIVEN MUCH PLEASURE,
AND EVEN FOUND THE WINNERS CIRCLE FOR A COUPLE OF FEATURES
AND SEVERAL HEATS. THE PRIDE AND JOY OF THE ACKERMAN RACING
TEAM, THE CAR RESIDES IN NEW BERLIN, NY AND WE BELIEVE IT IS A
FINE EXAMPLE OF AN ORIGINAL 'MODIFIED' STOCK CAR.
