Northern Stock Car Club
Reunion

The sun was out and the
B29 was ready, looked like
better weather than expected
so I grabbed a Hawiian shirt -
what else would one do when
heading north? Dad and I have
been looking forward to this
day, an invite from 'The
Legends of Watertown
Speedway' Author David
Stoodley to attend the
Northern Stock Car Club
drivers reunion in Watertown
sounded like great fun. Dick
May called from North
Carolina, 'would we bring the
B29?' Absolutely. Good chance
to exercise it as well as see
some old friends. Better bring
a jacket just in case - turned
out to be a good choice.
The car loaded up fine and
red shredder doesn't sound
like it's lost anything. During
the trip we chatted along
briskly, reminiscing about past
trips to LeFargeville and tracks
up this way. We had some real
adventures through the years
and although many didn't
turn out as we had planned,
we almost always had fun. By
the time we hit Watertown it
started to sprinkle and the
temperature had dropped
quite a bit, glad I brought that
jacket. We found the Northern
Improvement League building
with no problems and
unloaded to find new member
Larry Farrell's beautiful V3
Gary Reddick tribute car
already in place. David
Stoodley greeted us and from
there on it was like we were
with family. Many friends that
we hadn't seen in years
(must've been four years since
we've been up here) came by
to chat. Chris Brougham and
Bob Packman, Ally and Carol
Amell, Al Derouin, Floyd
Waterson (sorry we missed
Ronnie) and Fred Borrisow all
talked of our past exploits with
the club. Dick May showed up
and then a couple of fellows
wanted to hear the flathead
run, no problem, I like to hear
it run too. Even in the cold
(with a good shot petrol down
the stacks that is) she fired
right up and did us proud.
Just seeing the smiles on
these guys faces as the engine
throbbed was worth the trip
alone. All time leading feature
winner Bob Zeigler (31 wins
total) Dick May and Fred
Borrisow gathered for a nice
group shot alongside the B29.
Zeigler walked away asking
what I was burning with a
wink. Warming up inside I got
to talk with him a little more
as well as his brother Dick,
Ray Robinson, and others as
well. In all, 60 former drivers
from Watertown Speedway
showed up including Tiny
Benson, Dick Lappen, Orlie
Locey (he was great fun at our
table), Pat Obrien, and many
others I missed. Approximately
225 people filled the hall and
enjoyed the roast beef, turkey,
veggies and drinks served. A
great time, only wish we could
have stayed longer but as dusk
approached we figured we'd
better beat the dark and
chance of snow..so we loaded
and hit the road again. It was
truly great to see Dick May
again and he was most
appreciative of us bringing the
car along relating 'I'm very
proud of it', we are too and
also that we can share it with
other's at events like this.
Good to see all of our friends
too, be cool if we could turn
back the clock and run with
them again, at least we have
our good memories in tact and
it's good to know they do as
well.
  Back home and unload and
let the hounds out. Dad's on
his way home and I'm
watching 'Poley harrass
Belvedere into some good time
fun while Winston is searching
for that 'perfect spot'. Good to
come home to these smiling
faces and reflect on a great
day, one of many to come this
season. See you at the shows.
Bob Hayslett gave me this poster years ago now, a great one.
Larry Farrell alongside the V3.
Two pretty darn nice cars.
'Fast' Freddy Borrisow, Bob Zeigler and Dick May - many feature win here.
You won't meet many nicer guys than Dick May..
Memorabilia on display included Ken Myer models.
This would be quite a feature go..
Next time I'll bring a sweater..
