#9 D & J Ackerman, Pittsfield, NY
Upon returning from Europe after WWII, pilot Dave Ruel set about building a sprint car in his
West Springfield, Mass. shop. He started with some tubing and scratch built the car shown
here and  campaigned it with URC, AAA, NEBCRA, Southern Tier and Penn-Jersey from
1948 through 1955. The car is all home made using Ford components, the rear is 1/2 ton
Ford modified with an early (Franklin) quick-change kit, the in-out box is homemade, the 21
stud flathead sports a aluminum cast intake with 4 stromberg 97 carburetors placed directly
over each port and the ignition is a pair of wico 4 cylinder magnetos on a home made
aluminum v-drive. The car is rugged, not particularly light and un-modified. We were
pleased to find it in such nice shape and it's been a hit at the two shows we've taken it to so
far. Hope to get it out more this coming year.
